Tittle Contender: 'Charles Manyuchi Eligible for WBC Fight' - Boxing Boss

World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar has endorsed Charles Manyuchi as an eligible challenger for Danny Garcia’s world title.

The 28-year-old Garcia holds the WBC welterweight gold belt previously held by the now retired Floyd Mayweather Jr, and Sulaiman Saldivar says Manyuchi has every right to go after it.

The 27-year-old Manyuchi defeated Russian champion Dmitry Mikhaylenko in Yekaterinburg on May 6 to inherit the WBC silver belt vacated by Amir Khan.

The against-all-odds victory, achieved in front of a strong 27 000 crowd backing the Russian, has sent shock waves across the globe and reports suggest that close to 20 top pugilists are lining up for Manyuchi’s belt.

“The great win will certainly open a bright future for him, he is now eligible to fight for the title (WBC gold belt) as a voluntary challenger,” Sulaiman Saldivar told The Sunday Mail. “It was a very good fight, a close one and the crowd loved the fight.”

Manyuchi is expected to defend his belt this year and the WBC president urged his promoters to keep him active. “We are yet to discuss with his promoter (on the title defence) but we do recommend that he is kept active, he can become a star,” said Sulaiman Saldivar.

A possible Manyuchi-Khan fight has been mentioned following the latter’s failure to wrest the WBC middleweight title from Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez less than 48 hours after the Zimbabwean emerged victorious in Russia.

Alvarez floored Khan with 30 seconds remaining in the sixth round and the latter confirmed after that defeat that he was dropping back to the welterweight category. The Briton can still attempt to regain his silver belt but he told The Guardian newspaper that his next target remained WBC welterweight champion Garcia.

Despite the loss to Alvarez, a few months after vacating his WBC silver belt, Khan remains a mandatory challenger for Garcia’s gold belt.

“The WBC welterweight silver champion is Manyuchi and Khan will go for some tests and the WBC will wait for him to be medically cleared. Khan is the mandatory challenger for Garcia but there has been no date whatsoever,” said Sulaiman Saldivar. - The Sunday Mail
