Siyabonga Sangweni used to give his opponents a hard time as a defender during his days with Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates.
But now Sunday Sun sources claim that while his younger brother, Thamsanqa, has taken off, Siyabonga’s life has crashed.Siyabonga, also known as “Nsimbi”, retired from soccer in April last year after a knee injury. Sources close to the former soccer player claim he has just lost six cows and a car to an unknown local mashonisa.

One source claimed Siyabonga was rumoured to be operating taxis on a route from his hometown of Empangeni to his KwaZulu-Natal birthplace, Dondotha. Another source said the no-nonsense defender was finding life difficult since he no longer got a salary at home.
“No one wants to talk about the mashonisa issue. They swept it under the carpet,” the source said.
“It’s a shame now because it’s not even two years after he quit football, and he’s feeling the heat already. His tavern is not making that much money and the number of his taxis had declined because they are Inyathis.
“Those taxis are quickly damaged when used on gravel roads. You have to reserve some money to fix them now and again, while you’re also paying the monthly instalment.”
Another source claimed Siyabonga’s situation was so bad that Uthungulu Municipality was prepared to buy him a brand new car. This, after his annual Siyabonga Sangweni Games that were held at Dondotha sports ground.
The source claimed: “The municipality is trying very hard to help him out of his struggles. Siyabonga is regarded by many as a role model in Uthungulu. The municipality feels Siyabonga represented them very well.
“That’s why the council took the decision to buy him a car. It is unheard of, because the guy got millions of rands when he retired. We don’t know what happened to all his money,” said the source.
Siyabonga and Uthungulu Municipality were not available to comment. - Daily Sun
