Zim 'Coup': 5 Relevant Points by MDC Leader, Morgan Tsvangirai

Harare - Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai spoke to the media for the first time since the military rolled into Harare.

While reports remain conflicted on what Robert Mugabe’s plan is, Tsvangirai tried to shed some light on what was actually going on.

Here are five quick takeaways from his press conference.

The military is in control
You know how we keep being told this is not a coup. Well, look, it’s still quacking like a coup. And judging by what Tsvangirai said, the military is calling the shots.

Now, part of this is about an internal power struggle inside Zanu-PF, but the opposition leader said “the military are the only ones who can decide if Mugabe and his wife Grace receive immunity”.

There have been several reports that suggest Mugabe is being afforded the courtesy of negotiating the safety of him and his family, but where they might go is another question. The EFF have called for them to be granted political asylum in South Africa.

Zuma and other regional leaders have not reached out
While Tsvangirai was speaking, the special envoy sent by President Jacob Zuma was reportedly busy with their talks.

You’d think that in the midst of such a giant crisis, leaders of countries in the area might extend a hand and have a word? According to him: nah.

He believes elections will go ahead
Tsvangirai urged “each and every person over the age of 18 to vote when elections come”. Zimbabwe is due to have elections next year, but there have been some question marks over whether these will actually go ahead now with the powergrab.

Tsvangirai, at least, seems confident that they will.

Mugabe must go
Probably a bit of a no brainer, but he called for the President to resign immediately, ” in the interest of the people of Zimbabwe”. - Online Sources
