Sbusiso Moyo, the former army commander who pronounced the coup that dethroned President Robert Mugabe from power in November 2017, has died.
At the time of his death, Moyo was the foreign affairs minister in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cabinet. Before his death, the minister was suffering from a kidney ailment and was on treatment.

According to sources, Moyo tested positive two days earlier and was announced dead on Wednesday morning.

“His Excellency, the President Cde ED Mnangagwa regrets to announce the passing on the early morning of Dr. SB Moyo, our Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade,” the president revealed through his spokesperson. “The late Minister succumbed to Covid-19 at a local hospital,” he added.

To date, the second coronavirus wave has claimed high-ranking government officials, including the former minister of provincial affairs, Ellen Gwradzimba.
The late Moyo was the face of the coup that toppled Mugabe when he appeared on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC) to announce the takeover by the army. His fame soared, with sections of the media calling him general bae for his heroic stance.
